Rio de Janeiro City Hall inaugurates Porto Maravalley

The Porto Maravalley (Pomar) hub, a technological and educational project that includes IMPA Tech, was inaugurated by the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro this Thursday (11). The space, which will be sponsored by Shell and Eletrobras, will bring together startups and large technology companies in the same building as the Faculty of Mathematics.

The inauguration event was attended by the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, the Secretary of Urban and Economic Development, Chicão Bulhões, the deputy director of IMPA, Jorge Pereira, the president of Invest.Rio, Alexandre Vermeulen, the CEO of Maravalley, Daniel Barros, among other city authorities and businesspeople from the technology sector.

According to the City Hall, in addition to the two giants in the energy sector, there are already 20 companies in negotiations to set up shop in the area.

In the 10,000 m² warehouse in Rio's port area, approximately 30 offices were built, along with a coworking space, laboratory, auditorium, restaurant, café, and a large event arena that connects to IMPA Tech, the graduate program of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA).

The project's name, Maravalley, alludes to California's Silicon Valley, home to global technology and innovation companies. The revitalization project itself was inspired by various technology hubs around the world, such as the former shipyard in the Brooklyn district of New York, which has transformed into a hub with over 500 companies.
