Researcher bids farewell to Brazil at IMPA conference.

Since 2019 in Brazil, the Italian researcher Ugo Bruzzo bids farewell to the Brazilian scientific community during the 15th ALGA (Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry) which takes place at IMPA until Friday (10). The event is a traditional meeting of the areas of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, which takes place five years after the last edition and brings together leading names in the field.

With work connecting physics and mathematics, Bruzzo spent three years in João Pessoa (PB) as a full professor at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and says that his experience in Brazil was also marked by visits to IMPA.

“I’ve known the institute for over 15 years. I think this is my fourth visit to IMPA in just these years that I’ve spent in João Pessoa. It’s always great to be here, it’s a wonderful place. Especially because it reminds me a bit of where I work [in Italy], which has excellent students and good infrastructure,” commented Bruzzo.

He says he will return to Italy in early March to teach at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste. “I have mixed feelings. I’m happy to be returning to my work in Italy and I miss many things. But at the same time, I feel sad to have to leave Brazil and João Pessoa,” he said.

Also participating in the event was researcher Paolo Cascini, from Imperial College London (United Kingdom). He was awarded the 2016 Moore Prize by the American Mathematical Society (AMS), along with three other researchers, for an article considered groundbreaking in the field. The prize is a mathematical distinction awarded every three years for a notable research article published in one of the AMS journals.

He assessed his participation in ALGA as encouraging. “I came to IMPA in 2014 and I’m very excited to be back. I just arrived, but what I’ve seen so far has been great, of course! There are many lectures and several of them are from areas different from mine. This is great for me because I have the opportunity to learn new things!”, commented Cascini.

The meeting also features a lecture by researcher Alicia Dickenstein, winner of the 2021 L'Oreal-UNESCO International Prize for Women in Science. A researcher at the University of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and vice-president of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) from 2015 to 2018, she will present the lecture “Linear algebra, combinatorics and defectiveness” , on Thursday (9) at 12:00 pm.

On the same day, Renzo Cavalieri will participate in the congress, currently on sabbatical and this year part of the IMPA summer postdoctoral program. His lecture, at 2 PM, will address the modulus space of curves. Last week, he was already present at the XXVI School of Algebra in Curitiba (PR) – a space dedicated to Algebra and its applications, held in Paraná.

“Presentations by Young Researchers” from ALGA

This year, the 15th Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry conference inaugurated the "Presentation of Young Researchers." In addition to inviting speakers, the conference organizers provided a space for young researchers to present their research results. The number of papers submitted to the reviewers exceeded expectations.

“Many young people wrote to us, and we weren’t expecting so many submissions. We had to reorganize the program to accommodate most of the work. This high number of research submissions shows that the field is growing, and we are happy to open these spaces so that these young researchers can integrate into the community,” explained Carolina Araujo, a researcher at IMPA and a member of the event’s Organizing Committee.

In total, 18 young researchers or students nearing the end of their doctoral studies will present the first results of their research.
