Registration is open for the 2nd Junior Olympics – OBMEP.

The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) is opening registrations for the Mondays OBMEP Children's Olympiad , a mathematics competition aimed at students from the Mondays to the Thursdays grade of elementary school. Following the success of the 1st edition, which involved 2.7 million students from public schools, the organization has included private schools this year. Registrations can be made by educational institutions or education departments until June 1Fridays at olimpiadamirim.obmep.org.br .

The deputy director of IMPA and general coordinator of OBMEP, Claudio Landim, explains that the purpose of the Olympiad is to transform children's relationship with the subject through playful and creative activities. “The Mondays edition of the Children's Olympiad presents many challenges: sparking children's interest in mathematics, engaging teachers from the early years of elementary school, and increasing school participation. This year, for the first time, we invited private schools to this celebration of mathematics.”

The inclusion of private schools in the Olympiad ensures that a greater number of students have access to educational materials that stimulate logical reasoning. This process is already seen in the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP) , which has included the participation of private institutions since 2017.

Exam dates

The OBMEP Children's Olympiad will be held in two phases, both administered by the schools. The first phase takes place on August 28th and consists of a qualifying exam composed of fifteen multiple-choice questions. Students who qualify in this stage will be able to participate in the second phase, on November 9th, also composed of fifteen multiple-choice questions.

The content of the tests corresponds to the students' grade level, divided into levels Mirim 1 (Mondays and Tuesdays years of Elementary School) and Mirim 2 (Wednesdays and Thursdays years of Elementary School).

To celebrate the students' achievement, the Junior Olympics will provide digital certificates corresponding to gold, silver, and bronze medals. For more information , see the rules here.
