The 'For Women in Science' program is back. In its 20th edition, the initiative, conceived by the L'Oréal group in Brazil, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), and UNESCO in Brazil, promotes and recognizes the participation of women in science. Applications can be submitted through the website until June 11th, and the results will be announced in the second half of this year.

This year, the program will select eight female researchers, who will be awarded a grant of R$ 50,000 in areas such as life sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences, mathematics, and, for the first time, engineering and technology sciences, marking the expansion of the program and its commitment to diversity in science.

“Initiatives like this one for the inclusion of women in Engineering and Technology Sciences are crucial not only to promote equality, but also to enrich scientific research with different perspectives and talents. The lack of gender diversity limits the potential for innovation,” explains Helena Nader, the first woman and current president of the ABC (Brazilian Academy of Sciences).

In addition to the scholarship, the awardees will have access to exclusive online training focused on personal development, social media, negotiation, and team management.

Since 2006, the program's history has been marked by encouraging female participation in Brazilian science and by efforts to minimize the challenges that still affect the field. The initiative has already invested more than R$ 6 million in scholarships, impacting the career paths of more than 130 Brazilian female scientists.

To apply, female candidates who do not have children must have completed their doctorate by January 1, 2017. Women with one child will have the deadline extended by one year, and for those with two or more children, the additional deadline will be two years.

Among the requirements evaluated by the program are the scientific quality and impact of the research, previous work developed by the candidate, independence/productivity, and potential for success and applicability of the submitted project.

Registration can be done through the website .

Award-winning researchers

IMPA researchers Carolina Araujo and Luna Lomonaco have already been awarded the "For Women in Science" prize. Luna was selected in 2018 in the "Mathematical Sciences" category for her research in dynamical systems. Carolina Araujo was recognized in 2008 for her work in algebraic geometry. Adriana Neumann, Cecília Salgado, and Paula Veloso, former students of the institute, have also received awards.
