Registration is now open for the IMPA-SBM Journalism Award.
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented an unprecedented challenge for science journalists, who seek to convey information about the disease clearly, accurately and quickly. At a time when the importance of this work is even more evident, IMPA and the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) are launching the 3rd edition of the IMPA-SBM Journalism Award . Awarded in the categories "Mathematics" and "Science Communication", the award is open for entries from this Thursday (3), until October 1st.
Launched in 2018 to bring Mathematics closer to society and encourage scientific dissemination in Brazil, the award recognizes journalistic reports that present Mathematics, Science and Technology in an interesting and original way, provoke reflection on these areas of knowledge and stimulate their popularization in the country.

Journalistic pieces published between July 2019 and September 2020 in any media outlet – newspaper, magazine, portal, blog, television, radio, or other – are eligible to participate . The main judging criteria are: journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity, and quality of execution of the piece. Reports may reveal exemplary practices, talents, and innovations, as well as have an investigative character, pointing out problems related to the categories. To learn more, access theregulations .
The prizes are identical in both categories, "Mathematics" and "Science Communication": R $ 10,000 and diploma (winner); R $ 3,000 and diploma (2nd place); R $ 2,000 and diploma (3rd place). Honorable mentions, two in each category, will also receive diplomas. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2020 edition will announce the winners online on October 29th. The winners will be invited to participate in webinars on the topics of their reports.
The first two editions of the IMPA-SBM Journalism Award received more than 150 entries of journalistic works. In 2019, the winner in the Mathematics category was Gabriel Alves, from Folha de S.Paulo, with the series of reports "Mathematics Explains" . The article "First Brazilian mission in Egypt prepares excavation of ancient tomb" , by Júlia Marques, from O Estado de São Paulo, won in the Science Communication category.
