Registration is now open for the 19th OBMEP 2024.

The OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) opened registrations this Monday (5) for its 19th edition. Promoted by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) , the largest scientific competition in the country brings together more than 18 million students every year from the 6th year of Elementary School to the 3rd year of High School. Municipal, state, federal and private public institutions can participate. Registrations are made exclusively by schools on the OBMEP website, www.obmep.org.br , and the deadline is March 15.

The Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, highlights the importance of scientific competition over the years. “Today, more and more, we see the results in knowledge olympiads being used as a benchmark for academic performance, for example in admissions to undergraduate courses, such as IMPA Tech. It is yet another victory for the spirit that guided the creation of OBMEP by IMPA almost two decades ago.”

The competition will award 8,450 national medals, including 650 gold, 1,950 silver, and 5,850 bronze, in addition to 51,000 certificates of honorable mention . Students who win national awards are invited to participate in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) as an incentive and to promote academic development. The initiative offers a scholarship of R$ 300 to participants from public schools that are part of the program.

To further encourage student participation, OBMEP will also award prizes to students with the best state-level performance. At least 20,500 state medals will be distributed. It is important to note that the state-level award does not grant access to the PIC (Scientific Initiation Program).

This year, the Olympiad honors the 100th anniversary of scientists Johanna Döbereiner and César Lattes, whose discoveries demonstrate the high level of scientific production in Brazil. "Who knows, maybe these stories will inspire research aspirations in the country," emphasizes Claudio Landim, general coordinator of OBMEP and researcher at IMPA.

The Olympiad takes place in two phases, the first consisting of a multiple-choice test with 20 questions and the second of a written test with 6 questions. The first phase of the OBMEP will be held on June 4th, and those who qualify for the next stage will take the second phase test on October 19th.

The tests are prepared according to the student's grade level: Level 1 (6th and 7th grades), Level 2 (8th and 9th grades), and Level 3 (High School).

The list of those approved for the second stage will be released on August 2nd, and the winners will be announced on December 20th.

About OBMEP

Created by IMPA in 2005 and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
