Registration for the 4th Children's Olympics ends on June 10th.
Registration for the Wednesdays OBMEP Children's Olympiad , aimed at students in the Mondays to Thursdays grades of elementary school, ends on June 10th. Created by IMPA ( Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), with support from B3 Social, to stimulate mathematical learning in the early years, the competition is open to public and private schools throughout the country.
In just three editions, nearly 11 million students have already participated in the Olympiad, which also seeks to involve teachers in the teaching process, as explained by the general director of IMPA, Marcelo Viana. “The Children's Olympiad is aimed at both children in the early years of schooling and their teachers, aiming to bring mathematics into the classroom in a playful and engaging way.”
This initiative establishes itself as another important public educational policy. By sparking interest in mathematics from early childhood, the competition contributes to forming a generation better prepared for the challenges of the 21st century. “We believe that education is one of the most powerful paths to social transformation. Supporting the Children's Olympiad is a way to stimulate children's interest in mathematics from an early age, contributing to the development of fundamental skills and reducing educational inequalities in the country,” says Fabiana Prianti, head of B3 Social, the philanthropic arm of B3.
An example of the impact of the Junior Olympics is 11-year-old student Guilherme Dangió, a resident of Rio de Janeiro. Winner of a silver medal in 2024 and a gold medal in 2023, he explains how the experience has boosted his academic career. “The Olympics offer a greater challenge than school and are very important for our academic development. A medal can make a difference on a resume and change our lives,” says Guilherme, who entered the Fridays grade of elementary school this year.
The test takes place in two phases.
Held in two phases, the OBMEP Children's Olympiad exams are administered by the schools. The first phase will be on August 2Fridays and consists of a qualifying exam composed of fifteen objective (multiple-choice) questions. Students who qualify in this phase will be able to participate in the second phase, on November 11th. This exam also consists of 15 objective questions.
The content covered in the exam corresponds to the students' grade level, divided into Mirim 1 (Mondays and Tuesdays years of Elementary School) and Mirim 2 (Wednesdays and Thursdays years of Elementary School) levels.
To celebrate the students' performance, the Junior Olympiad will provide digital certificates corresponding to gold, silver, and bronze medals. “The initiative has established itself as an important stimulus to logical and mathematical reasoning among students from the Mondays to the Thursdays grade of elementary school. We expect significant participation from public and private schools across the country in this edition,” highlights Jorge Vitório Pereira, deputy director and manager of Olympiads at IMPA.
Registrations
Registration must be done exclusively by municipal, state, and federal public schools, education secretariats, and private institutions until June 10th. It is necessary to access the website olimpiadamirim.obmep.org.br and use the MEC/INEP code to register a password. Access to the restricted area will be via the login (MEC/INEP code) and password created during registration.
Registration for public schools is free. For private schools, a registration fee must be paid within the stipulated deadline. During registration, the person responsible for the application must indicate the total number of participating students per level: Mirim 1 and Mirim 2. It is not necessary to register each student individually.
Mathematical education
IMPA, a research and postgraduate institute, has organized the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) since 2005. Aimed at students from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school, the largest scientific olympiad in the country brings together more than 18 million students every year in 99.9% of municipalities. OBMEP is also the gateway to IMPA Tech , the institute's undergraduate program, which aims to train professionals qualified for the technological market and work.
Created in 2022, the OBMEP Children's Olympiad is an initiative of IMPA with support from B3 Social, CAPES, and CNPq. The competition is promoted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
