Registration for the 2018 OBMEP is now open.

Does your school belong to the public network of a very small municipality? Or does it operate in a metropolis? Is it a large private school? Is it an indigenous school? No matter the answer: all educational institutions in the country are invited to the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools), which, starting this Wednesday (21), receives registrations for its 1Wednesdays edition.

Municipal, state, federal, and private schools that offer grades 6 through 9 of elementary school or high school can participate in Brazil's largest scientific competition, organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). Last year, 18.2 million students from 99.6% of Brazilian municipalities registered for OBMEP, which, for the first time, was also opened to private schools.

Registration must be done by schools, by filling out the Registration Form available exclusively on the OBMEP website ( www.obmep.org.br ). The deadline is April Mondays, but don't leave it until the last minute. The exams will be held on June Thursdays (1st phase) and September 1Thursdays (Mondays phase). The announcement of the winners is also scheduled for November 21st. Those awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals are guaranteed entry into scientific initiation programs.

Created by IMPA in 2005 and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and the Ministry of Education (MEC) and is part of the activities of the Gomes de Sousa Mathematics Biennium 2017-2018.

For those who don't know, OBMEP contributes to stimulating the study of Mathematics in Brazil, identifying talented young people, and promoting social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge. Independent studies have already revealed the effective impact of the Olympiad on Mathematics results. Schools that actively participated in the competition, according to work by former INEP president Chico Soares, show an improvement in student performance of 26 points on the Prova Brasil exam, equivalent to 1.5 years of extra schooling.
