Registration extended for the 7th IMPA Journalism Award.

Registration for the 7th IMPA Journalism Award has been extended. Journalists have until Thursday (27) to submit reports on Mathematics and Science Communication for evaluation by the jury.

Held since 2018, the competition aims to encourage the publication of reports on these topics in Brazil and to recognize outstanding work that brings Mathematics and Science Communication closer to society.

The IMPA Journalism Prize will award R$ 36,000 to the top three winners in the two categories, "Mathematics" and "Science Communication": R$ 10,000 for 1st place, R$ 5,000 for Mondays place, and R$ 3,000 for Tuesdays place. Honorable mentions will also be awarded in each category.

After four remote editions, this year's awards ceremony will be held on September 7th at the National Mathematics Festival , an event organized by IMPA for the general public, in Rio de Janeiro. With the theme "Mathematics is Innovation," FestMat aims to show how science is behind technological advancements, as well as to bring the discipline closer to children and adults.

Professional journalists with reports published or broadcast between July 1, 2023, and June 23, 2024 , are eligible to compete for the award . Reports already submitted to a previous edition of the award are not eligible. Submissions from all media outlets are accepted – newspapers, magazines, blogs, television, radio, podcasts, or other.

In the "Mathematics" category, it is possible to submit articles on topics such as research, teaching the subject, the impact of knowledge olympiads, and the use of mathematics in the development of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. Reports for the "Science Communication" category can address scientific and technological advancements in all areas of knowledge.

Each journalist may submit a maximum of three reports or series. The main judging criteria are: journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity, and quality of execution of the story. Click here to access the regulations.

Since its first edition, nearly 900 journalistic works have been submitted to the IMPA Journalism Prize . 63 works from media outlets such as TV Globo, GloboNews, Folha de S.Paulo, Estado de S. Paulo, O Globo, Revista Piauí, Veja, Revista Superinteressante, Revista Galileu, among others, have been awarded. Nearly R$ 190,000 in prizes have been distributed over the last 6 years.

In 2023, first place in the "Mathematics" category went to the report "The Primacy of Cousins ," by journalist Bruno Vaiano, published in Superinteressante magazine, and"The Return of Ubirajara ," by Bernardo Esteves, from Revista Piauí magazine, was chosen as the best publication in the Science Communication category.
