PIC meetings bring together 260 people in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

The Regional Meetings of the PIC (Junior Scientific Initiation Program) of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina brought together 260 people in November. The events had a varied program with lectures, challenges, and workshops. The Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) hosted the participants of PIC-RS02, coordinated by Professor Márcio Luís Miotto, on November 9th. The choice of location reflected the desire to present the university experience to the students. One of the main initiatives of the meeting was a round table discussion with UFSM university students who were alumni of the PIC. The former participants of the program shared their experiences, their daily lives at the university, and the relevance of participating in the PIC for their academic journeys. The program also included the lectures "Geometric Constructions with Ruler and Compass" and "Introduction to Cryptography". The students were also challenged to participate in a "Paper Folding Workshop". According to PIC coordinator Márcio Luís Miotto, this is a special opportunity for interaction and exchange, especially among the virtual PIC students. “More than 70% of the students in our group are doing the PIC in the virtual modality. So, for this large portion of participants, the Regional Meeting is the only chance for interaction among themselves, as well as with their tutors. It's an excellent opportunity for them to get to know the university and, in a way, envision future possibilities for graduation. It was a very rewarding day.”

'Best opportunity in Brazil', says Francisco José Girls' Olympics end the year at IMPA Tech In Blumenau (SC), students from regions SC03 and SC04 held a collective program for the PIC Regional Meeting on November 9th. The event involved a series of activities such as lectures and workshops. The meeting was attended by 120 people, including students and organizers. In partnership, the teams provided a fun and in-depth day of mathematical topics such as equations, algorithms, and geometry. The workshops presented the selected content in a playful and participatory approach. “Algorithm in Action,” “Math Magic with Cards,” and “Spherical Geometry” were some of the activities. “It’s very rewarding to see the students involved in the mathematical activities with so much enthusiasm,” said Louise Reips, coordinator of PIC-SC04. Felipe Vieira, coordinator of PIC-SC03, reflected on how the university environment contributed to the event's success and the development of different academic experiences for the students. “It was very rewarding to hold the PIC Regional Meeting here at UFSC (Federal University of Santa Catarina) Blumenau. We managed to bring the students to attend lectures and workshops that are very different from what they are used to in schools, and this further promotes a passion for mathematics. In addition, throughout the day, the students were able to learn not only a different kind of mathematics, but also about the academic routine, including lunch being served in the university restaurant.”
