The traditional Professional Development Program for High School Mathematics Teachers (PAPMEM) will be held this year in two formats, between January 23 and 27. Classes will be held virtually, broadcast on IMPA's YouTube channel, and participants can choose between remote or hybrid participation (with an in-person exam at one of the program's centers). Registration is free and open through IMPA's institutional system until January 18.

PAPMEM allows for the improvement of content presented in the classroom and promotes discussion about modern and efficient ways of teaching and evaluating. The initiative is open to all teachers in the public and private school systems or to undergraduate students from any field. The complete course schedule is available on the IMPA website.

“The program aims to keep teachers updated on academic news and presents, in a modern way, mathematical topics that can be directly applied in the classroom, in addition to themes for expanding the teacher's culture and teaching resources. In PAPMEM 2023, for example, we will address a very interesting and current topic: the mathematics of reproduction and self-replicating machines,” said Eduardo Wagner, coordinator of the program.

From Monday (23) to Thursday (26), IMPA's YouTube channel will broadcast two classes a day to participants, always at 9 am. At the end of each class, the organization will send exercises in an online form, which must be answered within 24 hours. The answers will serve to count attendance and guarantee a certificate of participation for all participants, in virtual or hybrid format.

Candidates who opt for the hybrid modality will receive a certificate of participation with performance. In addition to attending classes from Monday to Thursday and answering the forms, they must attend in person, on Friday (27), the location selected at the time of application for the test.

Free of charge, PAPMEM was created in 1990 and covers selected topics from the three years of high school and some from elementary school. The program gave rise to a series of books aimed at high school teachers, published in the Mathematics Teacher Collection of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM) .

With support from the CAPES-FAPERJ program, PAPMEM also inspired the publication of the three volumes of the book "The Mathematics of High School Education" .Videos from previous modules of the program are available.
