'PAPMEM has a multiplier effect', says former participant.

Registration for PAPMEM (High School Mathematics Teacher Improvement Program) ends this Friday (18) at 6 pm. Former participant of the program, Carlos Neto, a teacher in the public and private school systems of Salvador (BA) and a doctoral student in Pure Mathematics at UFBA (Federal University of Bahia), is an enthusiast of the initiative. For him, the classes offer a significant impact on the professional development of the participants.

“One of the main merits of PAPMEM, in my view, is its multiplier effect: by better qualifying teachers, it contributes to the improvement of teaching in schools and, consequently, to the advancement of student learning. This transformation is even more significant in public school systems, where there is often a scarcity of opportunities for continuing education. Personally, I have had several opportunities after completing the courses.”

The doctoral student, who participated in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the program, assures that the ideas proposed during the four days of classes are easily applicable in the classroom. "Although the program addresses content with a higher theoretical level, it offers a solid foundation for teachers to transform concepts into teaching strategies, improve assessments and activities, and be inspired by the program's style."

Neto, who is also a professor at POTI (Intensive Olympic Training Centers) and TOM (Olympic Training in Mathematics) – an extension project of UFBA – is now preparing for a new challenge. “I was invited to be one of the professors for PROLIMPICO. So my energies were directed towards this commitment. Despite this, I always try to encourage and support fellow professors to participate in the course, as I know its relevance,” he concluded.

Held by IMPA since 1990, PAPMEM aims to improve the training of high school mathematics teachers throughout Brazil. Classes, in remote or hybrid format, will take place from July 21st to 24th. The 25th is reserved for assessments for those who registered for this modality.

This year, the program offers classes on new problems with right triangles; functions and geometry; statistical research problems with categorical variables; Pascal's triangle and its properties, among others. See the complete schedule here. Participating in PAPMEM are professors Carlos Gomes, Carlos Nehab, Eduardo Wagner, Flávia Landim, Luciano Castro, Paulo Cezar, Pedro Malagutti, and Rodrigo Villard.

PROLÍMPICO is also now open for registration.

Registration for the 11th edition of the Prolímpico (Olympic Teacher Improvement Program) is open until July 31st. The program, aimed at mathematics teachers and school administrators, covers content related to mathematics olympiads. Classes will be offered between August 4th and 8th. To participate, you must register by July 31st on the IMPA website. Click here.

The Prolímpico program aims to promote Olympic culture throughout the country, offering training and practical proposals for classroom application. The 11th edition will be entirely remote, with classes broadcast on IMPA's YouTube channel and the Google Classroom platform. Learn more.
