On March 8th, an event celebrates women in science.

On International Women's Day, March 8th, the event “8M – Women Scientists in Resistance” promotes a debate on the importance of celebrating women's victories and valuing the struggle of female scientists to gain space in the field. With the participation of mathematician Christina Brech (IME-USP) and sociologist Marina de Carvalho Cordeiro (UFRRJ), the meeting will be held in the Science and Culture Forum Hall at UFRJ, at 2:30 PM. The event is open to the public, no prior registration required.

Among the organizers is IMPA researcher Carolina Araujo, vice-president of the Committee for Women in Mathematics of the International Mathematical Union, and participant in the organizing committee of two major events: WM2 (World Meeting for Women in Mathematics), in 2018, and the Brazilian Meeting of Women Mathematicians, in 2019. For her, holding meetings that address gender disparity in science can contribute to a more equitable scientific environment.

“March 8th is a day not only for celebration, but also for reflection and struggle. The event represents a dialogue between female scientists from different fields of knowledge, so that together we can think about ways to build a more egalitarian and just society,” says the researcher.

To discuss the topic, the meeting will feature mathematician Christina Brech and sociologist Marina de Carvalho Cordeiro as guests, who will address gender in science from the perspective of different fields of expertise. After the debate, attendees will be invited to participate in the March 8th march, which celebrates women's historical achievements.

In addition to Carolina Araujo, the event is also organized by Luciane Quoos (UFRJ) and Tatiana Roque (UFRJ), and is promoted by the Science and Culture Forum Hall of UFRJ, in conjunction with the Institute of Mathematics of UFRJ and with institutional support from IMPA.
