Olympic Week returns to IMPA

Forty young math stars were at IMPA on Wednesday (19) for the second Olympic Week of the year. The training helps select the Brazilian teams that participate in international competitions, including the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO 2017), in July, in Rio de Janeiro.
IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, spoke with the group and celebrated the presence of the team that represented Brazil for the first time at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) this month in Switzerland. Jamile Falcão Rebouças, Juliana Carvalho de Souza, and Mariana Bigolin Groff won two bronze medals and an honorable mention.
"It's an unprecedented and significant result for a first-time female participant in renowned competitions," said Marcelo.
The chat was quick, and the teenagers began to pore over lists of exercises. A veteran of Olympic Week and a member of the team that competed in the 2016 IMO, João César Vargas said he doesn't feel anxious about "playing at home" during the IMO in Rio this year.
“This supposed pressure usually turns into support. We are very capable, but competitions like the IMO also reward those who think about resolutions in a way that is different from the usual,” said João César.
