Olympic Girls end the year at IMPA Tech
IMPA Tech hosted the IMPA Girls Olympics (MOI) project on Friday (6) for the 2024 closing program. The twelve schools that are part of the program participated in the event, which brought together 88 basic education students and 20 undergraduate and recent graduates in mathematics at Porto Maravalley. With support from the Firjan Sesi School project, a MOI partner since 2024, the closing aimed to celebrate the initiatives and achievements in 2024 and set goals for 2025. “The meeting showed how the project has progressed, how the girls have grown and matured. We had many achievements and realized that this is a path we can follow with these young women,” said the MOI coordinator, Letícia Rangel. The coordinator highlighted the importance of holding the event at IMPA Tech, to bring MOI participants closer to the day-to-day life of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) undergraduate program. IMPA Tech students Gabriely Di Folco and Bianca Zavadisk; the winner of the 2023 Elisa Frota Award and undergraduate student of Naval Engineering at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) Juliana Oliveira; and student from the Firjan-Sesi School in Jacarepaguá Flora Maria dos Santos shared their experiences, dreams, challenges, and motivations. The meeting also featured presentations from five groups from Firjan SESI Schools participating in “Math en Jeans.” This French project, created 30 years ago, offers basic education students the opportunity to experience hands-on research in mathematics. Isabela Alcântara, Mathematics Education Content Analyst for Basic Education at Firjan, highlighted that “the participation of 'Math en Jeans' in this final event of the Girls' Olympics allowed students to experience the impact of sharing their discoveries, with their presentations reinforced by the inspiring talks of the guests.” The program also included a workshop on building bridges with popsicle sticks and the creation of a collective mural about the most memorable experiences at the MOI in 2024.
