OBMEP Regional Meeting brings together 84 medalists in Salvador

The OBMEP will bring together, from Thursday (28) to Sunday (30), in Salvador (BA), 84 students from Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia for the first Regional Meeting of this year’s Olympiad. For three days, young people will participate in lectures, workshops, challenges and mathematical scavenger hunts, in a program that stimulates learning and the exchange of experiences.

Promoted by IMPA, with support from TIM, the event in Salvador is dedicated to students of the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC), intended for OBMEP national medalists. Students from the 6th year of Elementary School to the 3rd year of High School participate.

Held annually throughout the country, the Regional Meetings seek to stimulate and motivate young talents to deepen their knowledge, encouraging the training of future researchers. For Jorge Vitório Pereira, deputy director and manager of Olympiads at IMPA, the activity is an opportunity for students “to experience the academic environment and realize that mathematics can be, at the same time, challenging and pleasurable. For teachers, it is an opportunity to meet talented students, closely monitor their performance and be inspired by their enthusiasm, bringing new motivations and perspectives back to their institutions”.

The Regional Meeting in Salvador will have the participation of researchers from IMPA and other institutions, such as UFBA (Federal University of Bahia), UFOP (Federal University of Ouro Preto), UNEB (State University of Bahia), Unirio (Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro) and UFAL (Federal University of Alagoas). Among the topics covered are logical reasoning, cryptography, geometry, graphs, electronics, mathematical games and the history of probability. The program also includes moments of integration, such as the Mathematical Gymkhana and the Game Room.

PIC offers financial aid of R$ 300

The Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) is an initiative aimed at OBMEP national medalists, which offers the opportunity to explore thought-provoking questions in the universe of mathematics, expanding scientific knowledge and contributing to the academic and professional training of participants.

At PIC, students carry out activities guided by qualified professors in higher education institutions and research centers. The program is offered in two modalities: face-to-face and virtual. The virtual modality is intended exclusively for students who live more than 30 km from any PIC face-to-face center. Students from public schools that are part of the program have a scholarship of R$ 300 paid by the CNPq (National Council for Scientific and Technological Development).
