OBMEP: PIC students visit federal universities
A visit to the planetarium and the Physics Laboratory at UFPI (Federal University of Piauí), participation in games and a workshop on "Demonstrating the Pythagorean Theorem using concrete materials" were some of the activities carried out during the Regional Meeting of the PIC (Junior Scientific Initiation Program) in Teresina.
In total, 55 students participated in the event. The visit is part of the Regional Meetings of PIC Students, promoted by IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics), through OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools), in different regions of the country.

The goal is to bring together the students from the project and promote the teaching of mathematics in a playful and creative way, encouraging students' interest in the subject. " In addition to bringing students closer to mathematics, the main objective of the meeting was for the students to become familiar with the university environment, its structure and functioning, with the aim of encouraging them to enroll in our faculty, especially in mathematics," said Professor Jurandir de Oliveira Lopes, regional coordinator of the PIC.
The activities took place during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Mathematics department at UFPI.
Santa Catarina Regional Meeting
Also in September, 128 students from Santa Catarina who are part of the in-person and distance learning PIC programs, as well as the Mentors Program, visited the Federal University of the Southern Border (UFFS), Chapecó campus. During the visit, the students participated in a workshop on cryptography.
“The Regional Meeting is a very significant moment for the participants, because in addition to stimulating the study of mathematics and participation in the OBMEP exams, it promotes socialization between students and teachers of the 17th PIC, crowning in great style the success of the current edition of the program,” assessed Lucia Menoncini, regional coordinator of the PIC and mathematics professor at UFFS.
The PIC Regional Meetings are taking place until December in various regions of the country. It is expected that around 4,000 students will participate in different activities promoted by the program coordinators.
