OBMEP breaks record and reaches 99.9% of the country's municipalities.

The 19th edition of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP) broke two records: the largest number of schools, with 56,513 participating institutions , and the incredible mark of 5,564 cities – representing coverage of 99.9% of Brazilian municipalities .

These numbers are a milestone for the Olympiad, held since 2005 by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA). In total, 18.5 million students from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school will participate in the largest scientific competition in the country.

“Twenty years after we started OBMEP, it continues to grow and break participation records, with remarkable vitality: in 2024 we reached the impressive mark of 56,513 schools in 5,564 Brazilian municipalities,” highlights the general director of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.

This year, the Olympiad exams will be held on June Wednesdays (1st phase) and October 19th (Mondays phase). The announcement of the winners is scheduled for December 20th. Those awarded national gold, silver, or bronze medals will gain entry into the PIC (Junior Scientific Initiation Program), which offers advanced mathematics classes and a scholarship of R$ 300 for award-winning public school students who are part of the program.

The Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBMEP) will distribute 8,450 national medals, including 650 gold, 1,950 silver, and 5,850 bronze, in addition to 51,000 certificates of honorable mention. To further encourage student participation, the Olympiad will also award prizes to students with the best state-level performance. At least 20,500 state medals will be distributed. It is important to note that the state-level award does not grant access to the PIC (Scientific Initiation Program).

Created by IMPA in 2005, OBMEP is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and the Ministry of Education (MEC). The competition contributes to stimulating the study of Mathematics in Brazil, identifying talented young people and promoting social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge.
