OBMEP announces winners of the 17th edition this Tuesday (20)

The Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP) released this Tuesday (20) the list of award winners for its 17th edition, which brought together 18.1 million students from elementary and high school. Held by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), the initiative is the largest scientific competition in the country and reached 99.78% of Brazilian municipalities and more than 54,000 schools in this edition. In total, 575 gold medals, 1,725 silver medals, 5,175 bronze medals, and 51,900 honorable mentions will be awarded. Teachers, schools, and Municipal Education Departments that stood out for their students' performance were also recognized. The awards ceremonies for the 17th OBMEP will take place on a date to be determined by the organizers.

Medal winners are invited to participate in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC) as an incentive and to promote academic development. Participants are entitled to in-person or virtual meetings to deepen their mathematical knowledge, and students from public schools receive a CNPq scientific initiation scholarship of R$ 100 per month.

Medalists enrolled in undergraduate courses can also participate in the selection process for the Scientific Initiation and Master's Program (PICME) . Those selected have the chance to pursue advanced studies in mathematics alongside their undergraduate studies, in any area, and receive a CNPq Scientific Initiation scholarship worth R$ 400 per month.

In this edition, OBMEP reached 18.1 million students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school from 54,488 public and private schools.
