OBMEP 2019 breaks record for participating schools and municipalities.

The 15th edition of OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) has just reached two records: 54,830 schools registered, distributed across 99.71% of municipalities. Last year, 54,498 educational institutions, from 99.44% of municipalities, registered their students.
Organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), with support from the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the OBMEP will have the participation of 18,158,665 students from public and private schools in 2019.

"This is an excellent result in terms of registrations, and the IMPA's awards and competition logistics team deserves congratulations for the remarkable work of promotion they have done," declared Marcelo Viana, Director-General of IMPA.
Registration closed on March 15th. The exams will be held on May 21st (1st phase) and September 28th (2nd phase). The announcement of the winners is scheduled for December 3rd. Those awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals are guaranteed entry into scientific initiation programs.
Created by IMPA in 2005, OBMEP is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
The competition helps stimulate the study of mathematics in Brazil, identify talented young people, and promote social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge. Independent studies have already revealed the effective impact of the Olympiad on mathematics results. Schools that actively participated in the competition, according to work by former INEP president Chico Soares, show an improvement in student performance of 26 points on the Prova Brasil exam, equivalent to 1.5 years of extra schooling.
