Nova Iguaçu hosts Mathematics Olympiad
This Thursday (30), the municipality of Nova Iguaçu, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, will become the first in Brazil to organize a Mathematics Olympiad for students in the Wednesdays and Thursdays years of Elementary School. More than 16 thousand students from 118 schools will take the test, consisting of 20 multiple choice questions prepared by IMPA.
The initiative to hold the Nova Iguaçu Municipal Mathematics Olympiad arose from a technical cooperation agreement signed between the City Hall and IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics) . The municipality is promoting the Municipal Year of Mathematics, a series of initiatives to encourage the popularization of the discipline.

To prepare students for the Olympiad, mock exams were held in schools between June and August. In addition, teachers and students participated in chess workshops and competed in a municipal tournament last week.
Students with the best performance on the test will be awarded gold, silver, and bronze medals. The Municipal Mathematics Olympiad is a pilot project aimed at studying strategies to include Wednesdays and Thursdays grade students in the national competition. Since 2005, IMPA has held the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) in schools across the country for students from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school.
