The goal is to multiply knowledge in a playful, interactive, and fun way, sparking interest in mathematics among children and young people.
Educators, young students, and mathematics enthusiasts who wish to collaborate with the event can apply until July 1st on the National Mathematics Festival website . Applicants will be interviewed between July 18th and 22nd, and the final results will be announced by August 2nd. 'Mathematics needs its own air,' says doctoral student.
“For me, it was very gratifying to know that, in some way, I contributed to the evolution of mathematics education. Even though my participation was small, I know it made a difference. It was very remarkable to see students from the public and private school systems having access to the same content, interacting, playing, and learning together,” said Raílton Carvalho, a volunteer at the first edition of the Festival in 2017.
The program runs from 9am to 7pm on Thursday (29) and Friday (30) and from 10am to 8pm on Saturday (1st). With school visits on the first two days and activities open to the public on Friday and Saturday. The program includes workshops, such as games, quizzes or installations, in order to popularize the teaching of mathematics. In addition, there will be exhibitions, film clubs, lectures and roundtables.
Registration for workshops remains open until May 15th.
Those interested in developing workshops and other activities during the event can register until May 15th through the National Mathematics Festival website . Selection will be made through an open application process for any individual or school with a mathematics-focused project. Those selected will be announced by July 1st on the National Mathematics Festival website.
To participate, you must be 16 years of age or older and develop an activity that sparks interest in mathematics, demonstrates its importance, and shows its presence in every aspect of daily life. The evaluation will be virtual and will follow criteria such as creativity, mathematical principles, and originality. Those who submitted or competed for participation in the 2017 Mathematics Festival may resubmit for the 2022 edition, either in its original or improved version. Candidates who registered for the open selection in 2020 are already competing for this edition of the event.
Presentations must be given individually, with at least one co-author or collaborator to provide support during the presentation. Selected participants must be available to attend all three days of the festival, during all operating hours. They will also need to be present at Marina da Glória on pre-arranged days and times for the setup and preparation of their work.
The 1st edition of the National Mathematics Festival, held in 2017, brought together more than 18,000 people over four days. With free admission, the Festival took place in three locations in Rio – Escola Eleva, in Botafogo; Escola SESC de Ensino Médio, in Jacarepaguá; and Nave do Conhecimento Cidade Olímpica, in Engenho de Dentro. Participants were able to attend lectures by international popularizers and young mathematical talents in workshops and short films, as well as see the Imaginary exhibition, a first in the country.
