'My dream was to visit IMPA', says professor from Pará.


Raimundo Moura Barbosa, 60 years old, a mathematics teacher in the public school system of São Miguel do Guamá, in Pará, traveled more than 3,000 km to reach Rio de Janeiro on the 30th and be able to fulfill his dream of visiting IMPA this Friday (6).

Known as Professor Zico, the teacher arrived at the institute during the Summer Program and stated that he was delighted with the structure, which until then, he only knew through YouTube lectures . 

“I always dreamed of being here, I’ve always followed IMPA, and I’m very happy with this opportunity. I think everything is wonderful,” he said excitedly.

Summer course brings together Brazilians and foreigners at IMPA.

The professor, who teaches elementary and high school, also revealed that he was a fan of the former director of IMPA, Elon Lages Lima – one of the most important and productive authors of mathematics books in the country and winner of two Jabuti Prizes in Exact Sciences. The mathematician passed away in 2017.

"I also dreamed of meeting Elon, but unfortunately I didn't get to. I always followed him," he lamented.

Summer Program

IMPA's Summer Program started this Monday (2). The course is free and the activities extend to students and researchers from other institutions. Divided into subjects of scientific initiation, master's, doctorate and seminars, the program runs until March 3. Classes are also available on IMPA's YouTube channel.

In total, three undergraduate research courses, nine master's degree courses, seven doctoral degree courses, and ten seminars are offered. The list of courses is available on the website, as well as the schedules of activities. Check it out here. Registration is open until January 16th.
