Meeting on Women in Mathematics to be held on May 22
IMPA’s Meeting on Women in Mathematics (EMMI) reaches its 6th edition on May 22. Organized by female students at the institute, the event celebrates International Women in Mathematics Day, celebrated on May 12, and promotes a space for dialogue about the presence and challenges faced by women and other underrepresented groups in academic careers.
In a hybrid format, the meeting will include face-to-face activities, in IMPA’s auditorium, and simultaneous transmission via Zoom. Participation is free and open to the public, subject to prior registration in this link.
The program includes lectures, short presentations and a mediated conversation, encouraging the exchange of experiences between different academic backgrounds. One of the highlights are the “Minatalks” spaces, 3-minute presentation sessions that give visibility to academic research and experiences, and strengthen support and collaboration networks. The lectures will be given by Liliane Kunstmann, a post-doctoral student at IMPA, and Maria José Pacífico, a researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The program also includes a mediated conversation with Alva Rosa Tukano, Christina Brech and Nedir do Espírito Santo, addressing issues related to inclusion and diversity in mathematics.
The organizing committee is made up of doctoral students Diana Pulido, Gabriella Freitas, Vitória Ferreira and Mayumi Shiguihara, as well as master’s students Francisca Aguayo, Luísa Ranção and Mishel Zhigue.
