Meet the finalists for the IMPA-SBM Journalism Award.

Reports from Folha de S.Paulo, CBN, Veja, O Globo, Piauí, Jornal da USP, and O Dia+ are the finalists for the IMPA-SBM Journalism Prize. The Jornal Nacional series "Assustadora, ela está nas coisas mais simples da vida: a Matemática" (Frightening, it's in the simplest things in life: Mathematics) is the grand winner of the Hors-Concours Prize.

The Judging Committee analyzed 72 entries in the categories of Mathematics (31) and Scientific Dissemination (41) and defined the finalists of the first edition of the national Journalism competition. The awards ceremony will take place on August 9th, at 2 pm, during the closing ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), at Riocentro, in Rio de Janeiro. The winners will be announced during the ceremony.

The finalists include entries produced in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Alagoas. Created by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the IMPA-SBM Prize aims to bring mathematics closer to society and expand scientific dissemination in the country. The prize seeks to recognize reports that present mathematics and science in an interesting and original way, encourage their popularization, and provoke reflection.

IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, highlighted the motivation behind the initiative: “The award aims to foster and recognize the creation and publication in our country of journalistic pieces on topics related to mathematics and science as a whole. We believe it will contribute significantly to the dissemination of scientific culture in Brazilian society.”

Entries from ten states across the country were accepted for the award, having been published, exhibited, and broadcast in newspapers, magazines, online portals, blogs, and television and radio stations between January 1, 2017, and May 15, 2018. The selection of finalists considered the criteria of journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity, and quality in the execution of the journalistic material.

Ten finalists were selected, five per category. The prizes will be identical in both categories: R $ 10,000 and a trophy (winner); R $ 3,000 and a diploma (Mondays place); R$ 2,000 and a diploma (Tuesdays place). Up to two honorable mentions per category will receive diplomas.
