Meet the finalists for the 2019 IMPA-SBM Journalism Award.

Reports from O Estado de S. Paulo, Folha de S.Paulo, G1, Galileu, Piauí, UOL and TV Clube (an affiliate of TV Globo in Piauí) make up the list of ten finalists for the 2019 IMPA-SBM Journalism Award. The Judging Committee analyzed 82 entries in the categories of Mathematics (28) and Scientific Dissemination (54). The awards ceremony will be held on July 30th, during the 32nd Brazilian Mathematics Colloquium, at IMPA, in Rio de Janeiro.

Created by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the award is given to reports that present Mathematics and Science in an interesting and original way, provoke reflection on these areas of knowledge, and encourage their popularization in Brazil.

“The award is helping to bring IMPA and the scientific community closer to the media, a partnership that is fundamental to promoting scientific culture in society,” declared the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.

The second edition of the award received entries from 39 media outlets in the Federal District and 12 states: Ceará, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Sergipe, Rio Grande do Norte, and Rio Grande do Sul.

Articles published in newspapers, magazines, online portals, blogs, television, and radio between May 16, 2018, and June 15, 2019, were evaluated. The criteria considered in the evaluation were the journalistic relevance of the topic, originality, depth, clarity, and quality of the article's execution.

The Judging Committee was composed of Marcelo Viana, Director-General of IMPA; Paolo Piccione, President of SBM; Ildeu de Castro Moreira, President of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) and Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ); Raphael Gomide and Sergio Torres, journalists from Corcovado Comunicação Estratégica, the company responsible for IMPA's communication.

The prizes will be identical in both categories: R $ 10,000 and a trophy (winner); R $ 3,000 and a diploma (2nd place); R $ 2,000 and a diploma (3rd place). Up to two honorable mentions per category will receive diplomas.
