Mathematical Illiteracy

[two_thirds]

The TV Record program Domingo Espetacular went to the streets to find out if people know how to read… numbers.

So, are you good at math, or are you one of those people who can't solve simple calculations?

Mathematical illiteracy is not yet officially measured in Brazil, but the director-general of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, expresses concern about people's behavior regarding their lack of mathematical knowledge compared to other subjects. "People are generally ashamed of not knowing something. Except in mathematics. Some even find it funny."

Meanwhile, Fields Medalist and IMPA's outstanding researcher, Artur Avila, sees indifference towards the subject as the origin of this type of problem. "Accepting that mathematics is boring causes people to distance themselves from learning and hinders the entire educational process."
