Master’s and doctorate at IMPA: check the requirements for application

IMPA has open enrollment for the master’s and doctoral programs in Mathematics, both with the highest classification in the evaluation of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). To start the course in March 2026, applications must be submitted by October 15. Only complete registrations will be analyzed by the Teaching Commission.

The programs are free and aimed at training researchers of excellence in pure and applied mathematics. The academic master’s degree lasts two years and has a face-to-face format. Admission takes place in two periods — March to June and August to November — the second being reserved for exceptional cases, due to the offer of disciplines.

The doctorate covers several areas of research, including partial differential equations, dynamical systems, probability, geometry, algebra, combinatorics, mathematical physics, data science, optimization, machine learning, mathematical economics, data science, leaflets, among others.

How to apply

The registration process must be done through the IMPA Institutional online system. The candidate must create an account, select the desired program and fill out the registration with all the mandatory information.

It is necessary to attach:

  • Photo 3×4 for document and photo identification document;

  • Referrals of at least two professors for academic recommendations;

  • Official undergraduate transcript (or partial, if the course is not yet completed);

  • Personal letter describing plans during and after the course;

  • List of mathematics books, at the university level, read in full or in part.

Only applications with complete documentation will be analyzed. After the evaluation, the Teaching Committee will communicate the result by email. The attached documents will not be returned.

Opportunities in partnership with industry

In the area of applied mathematics, IMPA is also looking for students to join the project “Mathematical modeling of acoustic fields generated by directional sources”, under development at Centro Pi (IMPA Design and Innovation Center) and Fluid (Fluid Dynamics Laboratory). The work is led by IMPA researcher Pavel Petrov.

Developed in partnership with companies in the oil sector, the initiative offers students an opportunity for direct contact with real problems in the industry and the application of advanced mathematical methods in contexts of high economic and technological relevance. The initiative offers the opportunity for the student to double the value of the master’s or doctoral scholarship received.

Interested parties should mention Professor Pavel Petrov as their desired advisor and can obtain more information by e-mail centropi@impa.br.
