Marín: 'It's very important to have women in these spaces'

Former IMPA doctoral student, lecturer Karina Marín, researcher at UFMG, spoke this Thursday (27) about the importance of women leading research in mathematics and in spaces such as the International Conference on Dynamical Systems, which takes place until Friday (28) at IMPA.
"Representation is important, especially for female students. Sometimes, when you're a student and you only see men speaking, you think that only they can be in these spaces. I think it's very important to have women in these spaces, showing that they can get here too," said the researcher.
This was Marín's second time as a speaker at IMPA. On Thursday, she spoke to the audience about the behavior of chaotic systems during the introduction of variables. The study is based on results obtained by IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, from Lyapunov exponents.

For the first time at IMPA, UFMG doctoral student Raquel Saraiva said she had registered specifically to attend lectures on Lyapunov's leading figures, but was surprised by the other topics covered.
“We completely step out of our comfort zone. It’s been great to hear other ideas, to see other studies. It’s also an opportunity to talk to students from other colleges who are at other levels. This generates a great exchange,” assessed the doctoral student.
Also participating in the conference on Thursday was IMPA researcher Carlos Gustavo Moreira, who works on Jacob Palis's conjectures and proves that there is only a finite number of possible future periodic periods in a given system.
Moreira joined IMPA at the age of 14 for an introductory scientific course. Later, he graduated in Mathematics, completed his master's and doctorate degrees before turning 20; he did postdoctoral work in France and became a full-time researcher at the institute in 1997.
The fourth day of the Dynamical Systems Conference also featured lectures by Anton Zoritch (Paris-Jussieu) and Sylvain Crovisier (Paris-Saclay).
