Marcelo Viana receives the 'IMSA Mathematician's Prize'

Viana recebeu o prêmio de Maxim Kontsevich, membro do júri e medalha Fields 1998

IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, received this Wednesday (29) the “IMSA Award for Established Mathematician”, granted by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas (IMSA), through the institution's Collaborative Group of Mathematical Societies. The award ceremony took place at the 2nd edition of Mathematical Waves Miami (MWM), at the University of Miami, in the United States. “I am very grateful to the jury for choosing me as the winner of this award, it is a great honor for me. Even more so considering that it is a distinction conferred by IMSA, an institution whose mission of promoting cooperation in mathematics in the Americas has so much affinity with our work at IMPA,” declared Viana. The award is part of the initiative “IMSA Award: Celebrating Excellence in Latin American Mathematics”, which honored Viana and two other mathematicians with influential research in Latin America. They were recognized by the “IMSA Young Mathematician Award”. Alfredo Najera Chaves, from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), won as a prominent young figure in mathematics. Rita Jimenez Rolland, also from UNAM, received recognition as a woman with significant mathematical research in Latin America. All award winners will receive a cash prize and a certificate of recognition for their exceptional contributions to the field. The evaluation especially prioritized “mathematical significance, impact and quality of their work”. Before the ceremony, Viana gave the lecture “Partially Hyperbolic Dynamics”. The mathematician addressed characteristics exhibited by partially hyperbolic systems, especially those related to rigidity, Lyapunov exponents and pathological foliations. Another 23 Latin American mathematicians gave lectures on diverse topics, such as Real and Sparse Intersections, Geometry of Hodge Bundles on Riemann Surfaces and Complex and Symplectic Structures in Quasi-Abelian Lie Groups.
