Marcelo Viana gives an overview of the Mathematics Biennium in the Chamber.

How is mathematics viewed in the country today? The answers will reveal that the Mathematics Biennium , proclaimed by the National Congress through Law 13.358 of November 7, 2016, has generated a solid movement to demystify and popularize the discipline throughout the national territory.

The results achieved in the last two years will be presented this Wednesday (5), by the general director of IMPA, Marcelo Viana, at an event promoted by the Education Committee of the Chamber of Deputies and the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Education, in Brasília.

In the lecture, which will take place starting at 8 am in plenary room 10 of the Chamber of Deputies, Viana will show how the Biennium generated a wave of initiatives that spread beyond Rio de Janeiro, the host city of the two largest global events in the field: the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), in July 2017, and the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM), in August 2018.

As a member of the Mathematics Biennium Honorary Committee, Viana observed how the initiatives impacted society in general. During the Mathematics Festival, for example, approximately 18,000 people in Rio de Janeiro, including families, students, and teachers from elementary and high schools, experienced the fun and challenging side of mathematics.

The Olympiads held by IMPA (IMO, OBMEP, OBM) will also be detailed during the presentation. With proven positive effects on the performance of students from public and private institutions, the competitions are an example of how, through Mathematics, it is possible to contribute to the development of Education in the country.

Viana was invited by the coordinator of the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Education, Deputy Alex Canziani (PTB-PR), author of the bill that established the Mathematics Biennium, together with Deputies Pedro Fernandes (PTB-MA) and Wilson Filho (PTB-PB).

In addition to the national-level results, presented by the Director-General of IMPA, the initiatives of the Biennium in Paraná will be presented by Lucimar Donizete Gusmão, PhD in Science and Mathematics Education. The meeting will be open to all those interested in the topic.
