If mathematics is essential to our daily lives, it needs to be accessible to everyone. The "Open Book of Mathematics " project was the topic of a virtual debate between Professor Humberto Bortolossi from the Federal Fluminense University and the director of the School of Mathematics at Unirio. The project was launched by IMPA in 2018 and is expected to have new developments next year, with the publication of teaching materials for high school.
In a rare appearance on social media, the general coordinator of the Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM), Carlos Gustavo Tamm, known as Gugu, spoke with Samuel Barbosa, a professor at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), about the mathematics of the Olympiads . "Having thought about a good number of difficult problems on varied subjects, even if elementary mathematics, certainly helps develop skills that are useful in research," Gugu affirmed regarding his Olympic heritage. The researcher also launched a mathematical challenge for future competitors to practice at home.
The decentralized quarantine model presented by mathematician Tiago Pereira, from ICMC-USP, was one of the highlights of the webinar “Mathematics in times of crisis ”, which concluded the week's program.
