Letícia Mattos receives an honorable mention at the Gutierrez Prize.

The doctoral thesis of Letícia Mattos, from Minas Gerais, defended at IMPA in 2021 and supervised by researcher Robert Morris, received an honorable mention in the 2022 Professor Carlos Teobaldo Gutierrez Vidalon Award. Titled “ Combinatorial Properties of Random Graphs and Matrices ,” the work had already won the 2021 IMPA Thesis Award and is the institute's nomination to compete for the 2022 CAPES Thesis Award. In her thesis, Letícia studied two of the main objects in probabilistic combinatorics: random matrices and random graphs.

The winning thesis of this edition of the Gutierrez Prize was “Systoles and minimal surfaces on 3-manifolds with boundary”, by Eduardo Rosinato Longa, PhD from the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of São Paulo (IME-USP), under the guidance of Paolo Piccione, professor at the same institute. The thesis explores how the curvatures of a 3-dimensional manifold with boundary affect the topology and geometry of two classes of compact surfaces: the minimal capillary surfaces of index one and those that are topologically non-trivial.

Created in 2009 by the Institute of Mathematical and Computer Sciences of the University of São Paulo (ICMC-USP), in partnership with the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the Gutierrez Prize recognizes the best doctoral thesis in mathematics defended in Brazil in the previous year, awarding R$ 3,000 to the winner. The award ceremony will be held on September 2Fridays, at 2 pm, in the Fernão Stella de Rodrigues Germano Auditorium, at ICMC-USP.
