Lectures and computer classes mark PIC meetings.
A mini-course in computer science, application development, and visits to universities were among the activities of the Regional Meetings of the PIC (Junior Scientific Initiation Program) in Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. The events brought together 220 people between the end of October and the beginning of November. Eighty students from the PIC-PI02 region met at the Federal University of Delta do Parnaíba (UFDPar) between October 26th and 27th. The program included a guided tour of the university campus, especially the teaching laboratory of the mathematics degree course. "It was an incredible experience. It was really a motivation to continue this Olympic journey, and I certainly learned many things, had incredible opportunities, met wonderful people, and everything was simply perfect," said PIC-PI02 student Maria Letícia Cardoso. Students participating in the virtual PIC program enjoyed a special schedule, including overnight stays in a hotel and dinner, to attend the event. Pedro Jorge dos Santos, coordinator of PIC-PI02, sees the program as a great opportunity for socialization and exchange of experiences. The coordinator also emphasizes that "the Regional Meetings serve as an important source of motivation for students to continue their academic trajectory in mathematics and exact sciences." In Rio de Janeiro, the RJ01 group, composed of 78 participants, met on November 9th at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Unirio), in Urca. The theme of the meeting was "Art with Möbius Strips – Young People from Brazil in the Mathematics Olympiads," with activities that included lectures and workshops. Contact with research, extension, teaching and cultural initiatives are some of the opportunities that PIC can offer to participants. “The model allows for the exchange of experiences between students of different levels and strengthens contact networks, in addition to developing communication and collaboration skills. This type of event also reinforces the role of the university as a space for social and cultural integration,” highlighted the coordinator. With the right to the OBMEP Regional Medal Ceremony, PIC-MG05, with 63 participants, met on November 14th at the State University of Montes Claros (Unimontes). In total, ten medalists were awarded. Organized by coordinator Warley Ferreira, the Meeting also included a guided tour of the campus. The program began with accounts from participants of the Hilbert Hotel Meeting and their experiences. Students discussed Euler's theory and participated in mini-courses in the computer lab, where they developed two smartphone applications using the AppInventor tool. “It was an incredible experience. What I liked most was the lecture on Euler's characteristic and the opportunity to develop a mobile application, a different activity for me. Furthermore, receiving a medal at an event like this is a great incentive, especially because of the presence of important people who value our achievement,” said Gustavo Brandão, gold medalist at OBMEP and participant in PIC-MG05.
