There are only a few days left to register for the 1st Children's Olympiad – OBMEP . This is the first national mathematics olympiad aimed at such young students and aims to encourage the teaching of the subject in the early grades. Registration is free and must be done exclusively by municipal, state and federal public schools, or by the education departments throughout the country. The deadline is June 16th.
Organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) , the competition is aimed at children from the 2nd to the 5th grade of elementary school. Since 2005, the institute has organized the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) for students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school.

“It’s a challenge to come up with thought-provoking questions for students who are still learning to read and write, but our main goal was to have a great time with these young people! We hope to generate interest in mathematics, since one of the biggest bottlenecks in teaching the subject in our country is precisely in the early grades,” said Claudio Landim, deputy director of IMPA and general coordinator of OBMEP.
In 2018, IMPA began the process of including the early years of elementary school with OBMEP – Level A, aimed at students in the 4th and 5th grades of elementary school. Now, with the Junior Olympiad , the project has been expanded to include children in the 2nd and 3rd grades.
Registration deadline: June 16th
To register for the OBMEP Children's Olympiad, you need to access the competition's website and use the MEC/INEP code to create a password. Access to the restricted area of the portal will be via the login (MEC/INEP code) and password created during registration.
The person responsible for the application must inform the total number of participating students per level: Mirim 1 (2nd and 3rd years of Elementary School) and Mirim 2 (4th and 5th years of Elementary School). It is not necessary to register each student by name.
How does the Junior Olympics work?
The Children's Olympics will be held in two phases, both administered by the schools. The first phase takes place on August 30th and consists of a qualifying exam composed of fifteen objective (multiple choice) questions.
Students who qualify in this stage will be able to participate in the second phase, on October 11th, which will also consist of fifteen multiple-choice questions. The content of the tests corresponds to the students' grade level, which is divided into Mirim 1 and Mirim 2 levels.
The 1st Children's Olympiad is an initiative of IMPA, with support from B3 Social, CAPES, and CNPq, as well as the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM). The competition is promoted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
