Landim and Gugu will talk about the Olympics on 'Live do Valor'.

IMPA's deputy director, Claudio Landim, general coordinator of OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools); and researcher Carlos Gustavo Moreira (Gugu), general coordinator of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM), are the interviewees for the Valor Econômico newspaper's live broadcast this Friday at 11 am. The transmission will be on the newspaper's YouTube channel . The IMPA researchers will talk about the organization, history, and impact of the Brazilian mathematics olympiads.

Created in 2005, OBMEP is the largest school olympiad in the world, bringing together 20 million participants annually in 99.8% of Brazilian municipalities. Initially dedicated to students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school, OBMEP gained a version for younger students, in the 4th and 5th grades, in 2018.

Olympiad medalists are invited to participate in the Junior Scientific Initiation Program (PIC), which offers a monthly scholarship of R$ 100 so that students can attend advanced mathematics classes at higher education institutions. The competition has also given rise to other important initiatives in the field of education, such as OBMEP at School and the Intensive Training Olympic Centers (POTI).

The Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad (OBM) is aimed at students from schools and universities across the country, both public and private. The competition, held since 1979, brings together more than a thousand students annually and aims to stimulate the study of mathematics and discover young talent. Medal winners who excel are often selected to join the Brazilian team for international mathematics competitions, such as the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO).

This conversation is part of the “Lives do Valor” series, which has already featured IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana . Other interviewees in the series include Arthur Lira, President of the Chamber of Deputies; Rodrigo Pacheco, President of the Federal Senate; and José Pio Borges, former President of BNDES.
