Jorge Vitório Pereira is a plenary speaker at MCA 2025 in Miami.

IMPA's deputy director, Jorge Vitório Pereira, is one of the plenary speakers at the Mathematical Congress of the Americas 2025 (MCA), which began this Monday (21) and runs until Friday (25) in Miami, United States. The event is one of the initiatives of the Council of Mathematics of the Americas (MCofA) , a network that brings together research institutions based in the Americas to promote the development of mathematics on the continent.

Launched in 2013 and now in its fourth edition, the Congress seeks to internationally highlight the excellence of mathematical achievements in the Americas and promotes collaborations among researchers, students, institutions, and mathematical societies in the Americas. The 2025 edition is organized by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas (IMSA) – University of Miami, in the United States.

This Tuesday (22), the deputy director of IMPA will give the lecture “Foliations with trivial canonical class”. Focusing on results, the lecture will promote a review of developments in the area over the last four decades. Connections with other areas of complex geometry will also be discussed, including Beauville's conjecture on the decomposability of universal coverings of compact Kähler manifolds and the theory of holomorphic Poisson structures.

“It is an honor to give a plenary session at a congress of the magnitude of the MCA. This is a recognition of the research area in which I have been working throughout my career: foliation theory using methods from algebraic geometry. I will discuss the advances in the study of foliations with a trivial canonical class that have occurred in recent decades. This is a particularly relevant class of foliations considering its relationship with Poisson geometry and its unique character in the birational geometry of foliations,” said Pereira.

In addition to the IMPA researcher, the panel of speakers includes Alexei Borodin (Massachusetts Institute of Technology); June Huh (Princeton University); Melanie Matchett Wood (Harvard); and Maciej Zworski (University of California, Berkeley). The program also features twenty other invited speakers from various research institutes, such as the University of Toronto, the University of São Paulo (USP), and the University of California, Los Angeles.

With the 2025 edition, IMPA marks its participation in all Congresses since 2013. In the first year of the event, IMPA's extraordinary researcher and professor at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Zurich, Artur Avila, was one of the invited plenary speakers, while Marcelo Viana, the institute's director-general, participated in the event's steering committee. Researchers Robert Morris and Carlos Gustavo Moreira participated in 2017, and researcher Carolina Araujo attended the last edition of the event in 2021.
