Jorge Vitório Pereira gives a lecture and participates in the OMU awards

The deputy director and manager of Olympiads of IMPA, Jorge Vitório Pereira, participated this Sunday (14) in the 41st Award Ceremony of the Mathematical Olympiad of Unicamp (OMU), in Campinas (SP). During the weekend, the students took the test of the 3rd phase of the competition and took advantage of a special program.

Organized since 1985 by the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), OMU is aimed at basic education students and aims to stimulate interest in mathematics through challenges that contribute to the academic development of participants.

On Saturday (13), Jorge Vitório gave a lecture to the students and the next day participated in the OMU Award Ceremony. “I can’t help but be impressed by the milestone of 41 editions of the competition. An event that started locally, almost an activity from Campinas. And today it has this national dimension, reaching participants from all over the country”, said Jorge Vitório at the ceremony.

The deputy director also stressed the importance of the dedication of the organizing team. “I leave here my recognition for the work of Unicamp and OMU has been doing over 41 editions. I think that this impact, and this national identity that OMU acquired may have been one of the very few benefits that we had with the pandemic. We were forced to go online and online led to the national. Today, we are here, on a Sunday, filling the campus of one of the most important universities in the country.”

The OMU had participants from the OBMEP (Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympiad) and Jorge Vitório celebrated the reunion with the students. “I was very happy to meet students I already knew from other opportunities, such as the OBMEP National Award Ceremony and the Hilbert Hotel, it is always good to see you again”.

IMPA Tech, IMPA’s undergraduate program, was also mentioned in the speech. “All of you are very welcome to consider IMPA Tech a possibility for the future”, invited Jorge Vitório.

For Giuliano Zugliani, professor at Unicamp and coordinator of OMU, the program is an important moment for young people to contact Unicamp. “It’s super exciting and fun. We see the teams that arrive here, sometimes for the first time seeing a large university. So there is that brightness of envisioning that one day they can study here”.
