Jara explains 'the mathematics behind pins'

With the lecture "The mathematics behind the pins", IMPA researcher Milton Jara opened the activities of the 18th meeting of OBMEP gold medalists this Monday (10). The activity is part of a three-day program developed for students who stood out in the edition of the Olympiad held last year.

At the event, the IMPA researcher spoke about ferromagnetism and warned the students that mathematics is everywhere. "Wherever you look, there's a mathematical problem to be discovered."

One of the medalists present at the event is Thales dos Santos, 12 years old, from Mato Grosso do Sul. Excited about the event, the student said that he "would like to win another gold medal just to travel again with OBMEP".

Throughout the day, the 650 gold medalists participated in games and gathered for an afternoon of games. In the evening, they will be treated to a big get-together party. On Tuesday (11), the long-awaited OBMEP National Award Ceremony will take place, which will be attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Ministers Camilo Santana (Education), Luciana Santos (Science, Technology and Innovation), Governor Cláudio Castro, Mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, as well as the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.

The 18th edition of OBMEP had more than 18.3 million participants, from the Fridays grade of elementary school to the Tuesdays year of high school, from 55,300 public and private schools in 99.8% of Brazilian municipalities.
