Jacob Palis receives tribute from MCTIC in Brasília.

IMPA Emeritus Researcher Jacob Palis will be honored by the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications (MCTIC) next Monday (23), at 11 am, during the opening of the 14th National Science and Technology Week (SNCT 2017) in Brasília (DF).
The National Science and Technology Week (SNCT), from October 23rd to 29th, will take place throughout Brazil, including at IMPA , and will have as its theme "Mathematics is in everything," in support of the positive agenda established by the 2017-2018 Mathematics Biennium.
Every year, the National Science and Technology Week (SNCT) honors a professional dedicated to the scientific development of the country. In 2017, the mathematician Jacob Palis was chosen. A full professor at IMPA since 1968, Palis works mainly in the area of dynamical systems. He was the institute's director-general from 1993 to 2003. He also presided over the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC), the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), and the International Mathematical Union (IMU).
The event will be attended by the Secretary of Policies and Programs for Research and Development of the MCTIC (Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications), Jailson de Andrade; and the Director-General of IMPA (Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics), Marcelo Viana, as well as authorities linked to the MCTIC.
Palis will receive a commemorative plaque from Jailson de Andrade for his contribution to science in Brazil. The mathematician will also have his name given to the community center at the Exhibition Pavilion in Parque da Cidade, which will host the activities of the SNCT 2017 in Brasília.
