Jacob Palis is honored for helping introduce the internet.

The National Education and Research Network (RNP) honored mathematician Jacob Palis, emeritus researcher at IMPA, this Monday (6). He received the Diploma of Builders of the Internet.br, in a ceremony held in Rio de Janeiro (RJ).

The event commemorated the 2Thursdays anniversary of the launch of the first national internet network in Brazil. The organization recognized professors, academics, and representatives of institutions that contributed to the establishment of the internet in Brazil between 1992 and 1993.

Palis was the director of IMPA from 1993 to 2003, a period in which the internet emerged and became widespread in Brazilian society, as well as in educational institutions throughout the country.

The awarding of diplomas began at the RNP Forum 2017, held in Brasília in October of this year, and continues in local and national ceremonies for those who were unable to attend the event.
