It's gold! 650 students from all over the country receive medals in Rio de Janeiro.
After six years, Rio de Janeiro will once again host the National Award Ceremony of OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools) . Promoted by IMPA (Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics) , the largest scientific competition in the country brings together more than 18 million participants every year. In total, 650 students are awarded the gold medal and receive the honor in a special ceremony. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva , the Ministers of Education, Camilo Santana , and of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos , the Governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro , and Mayor Eduardo Paes were invited to the ceremony, which will be on Tuesday (11), at 3:30 pm, in Barra da Tijuca, west of the city .
“The OBMEP national awards ceremony celebrates the talent present in every corner of this continental country, in an exciting celebration that culminates in another cycle of the Olympiad,” highlights the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.
Held annually, the event is the most anticipated by students who excelled in the competition. The 18th edition had more than 18.3 million participants, from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school, from 55,300 public and private schools in 99.8% of Brazilian municipalities.
The OBMEP organization promotes all the logistics of the event so that the gold medalists have a unique experience. They arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (9) to participate in activities, lectures, a welcome dinner and prize draws.
Rio Grande do Sul will be represented at the ceremony.
The delegation from Rio Grande do Sul has confirmed its participation in the event. Around 60 students will travel to Rio de Janeiro with regional coordinators to receive the coveted gold medal. OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematical Olympiad for Public Schools) has altered flight arrangements and adjusted logistics to meet the needs of students from the state, which was devastated by floods.
In addition to the 650 national gold medals, the 18th OBMEP has already distributed 1,950 national silver medals and 5,850 national bronze medals, as well as 48,163 honorable mentions. The national silver and bronze medals are awarded at regional award ceremonies held by the OBMEP Regional Coordinators distributed across 71 regions of the country. The Olympiad also distributed another 20,500 medals to the top-performing students at the state level.

Created by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and held with the support of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the Ministry of Education (MEC).
Aimed at students from the 6th grade of elementary school to the 3rd year of high school, OBMEP contributes to stimulating the study of Mathematics and identifying young talents in the discipline. Other objectives of the initiative are to promote social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge and to contribute to improving the quality of basic education, enabling a greater number of Brazilian students to access quality teaching materials.
