International Congress of Mathematicians in Numbers

It was nine days of total immersion in the world of Mathematics, where 3,018 delegates from 114 countries participated in the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2018), held in Rio de Janeiro, in its first edition in the Southern Hemisphere.

The numbers were impressive: 5,790 attendees; 1,301 support staff; and 228 volunteers. In total, the event welcomed 10,506 people.

ICM 2018 concludes with an invitation to the next meeting.

In the period leading up to the meeting, 3,982 texts were evaluated for presentation – 910 were accepted for lectures, 435 for short communications, and 475 for posters. An additional 21 plenary presentations were also held.

The five lectures that drew the largest audiences were: Cédric Villani, 1,300 people; Ingrid Daubechies, 1,230; Rogerio Martins, 1,220; Étienne Ghys, 1,020; and Tadashi Tokieda.

At the ICM 2018, the Fields Medal, the Chern Medal, and the Nevanlinna, Gauss, and Leelavati Prizes were awarded.

The exhibition hall featured 29 booths and attracted a large number of visitors, especially students from public schools.
