Interdisciplinarity marks the first 'Fourier Analysis & Beyond I'
The first edition of the workshop “Fourier Analysis & Beyond I” brings together, until Friday (4), at IMPA, researchers to present their recent contributions in the area of Fourier Analysis and related topics. The event started on Monday (30) and has more than 60 participants.
The workshop highlights the potential for interdisciplinarity in the field of Fournier Analysis. “Fourier Analysis originated from questions in the theory of differential equations, but it has grown and become a research field in its own right, with important applications in areas such as number theory, probability, mathematical physics, and computer science,” explains IMPA researcher Felipe Gonçalves.
Gonçalves, who is co-organizing the workshop with researchers Emanuel Carneiro, from the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy, and Mateus Sousa, from the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics in Spain, hopes that the workshop will become a regular event on the calendar.
“The workshop brings together experts at the interface between Fourier Analysis and other areas, and we hope both to present some of the recent developments to the young community and to stimulate new research directions. We are very happy with the dynamics of the event so far and hope that this will be the first of many editions,” says Gonçalves.
For IMPA master's student Lada Dudnikova, the event is an opportunity for scientific exchange, as well as broadening her perspective on geometry, an area of interest. “ I discovered that several IMPA students, who were students at the institute in 2019 and 2020, are contributors to this event. Professor Emanuel Carneiro, who was once a student at the institute, is very well-known in the field, for example. So, I became very interested because this is also a meeting point for people. I arrived already knowing several people. For me, it's proving to be an important event both academically and socially.”
André Pedroso Kowacs left the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) – where he recently completed his doctorate – to participate in the workshop and visit IMPA for the first time. “ I always wanted to visit IMPA and I'm really enjoying it here, it's very cool. I'm from the area of Partial Differential Equation (PDE) Analysis, I work a bit with Fourier Analysis. It's an area that interests me a lot, so it's been very important to see some slightly different topics, but still related to the field,” he said.
Luis Salge, a professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Uerj), is at IMPA for the second time to participate in the workshop. In early 2024, the mathematician participated in the Summer Postdoctoral Program – which is open for applications until October 31st.
"I learned about the event through a colleague's recommendation and decided to participate. The areas I work in involve a lot of Fourier Analysis, so I was interested in the workshop," he said.
