Institute mourns death of medalist Yuliia Zdanovska

IMPA regrets the death of the young Ukrainian Yuliia Zdanovska, 21, silver medalist at the 2017 European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO). Yuliia Zdanovska died in a fire that started after an explosion caused by a Russian missile that hit a residential area in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine.
“Yulia was extraordinary. A prodigy. She graduated in Computer Science from the best university in Ukraine and could work for any tech giant,” said Teach For Ukraine, an organization dedicated to tutoring services where the 21-year-old helped other students, on its Facebook page.

Yuliia was the winner of several competitions for international and Ukrainian students. Teach For Ukraine described her as "passionate" about mathematics, a subject that "could make anyone fall in love with."
IMPA expresses its solidarity with the family and the mathematical community as a whole, which joins in mourning and paying tribute to Yuliia.
