Ana Claudia Souza, 18, is practically an exception at her school. The third-year high school student doesn't like math. But that didn't stop her from winning a medal at the OBMEP (Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools).

Her award was nothing new at the Augustinho Brandão state school, which has accumulated 131 medals since 2006. This phenomenon not only brought the school from Cocal dos Alves, in the interior of Piauí, into the spotlight in recent years, but also helped create a wave of enthusiasm for the subject.
