Rio – Every Wednesday, a group of young people seeking a better future through mathematics meet in a classroom in Tijuca, in Rio's North Zone, to practice their logical reasoning skills. For about four hours, the group spends most of their time standing in front of the blackboard, trying to solve problems. They are between 15 and 17 years old and, at the Eleva publishing house, are preparing for international mathematics competitions. They dream big, seeking professional opportunities in the field of Computer Science.
João Pedro de Carvalho, 15, wants to win a place at Stanford University or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was in February of this year, along with his colleague António Alves, also 15, to represent Brazil in an international mathematics tournament offered by MIT in partnership with Harvard.
