IMU is holding a virtual marathon for International Mathematics Day.

How can mathematics contribute to a better world? The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the field into focus and shown how mathematical models and tools help to understand, monitor, and control the spread of the virus. To celebrate International Mathematics Day, celebrated on March 1Wednesdays, in such an emblematic year, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) will bring together teachers, researchers, and the general public in a virtual marathon. The idea is that, together, number enthusiasts from around the world can discuss the importance of science in positively transforming our daily lives.

Anyone wishing to participate in the mathematics festival should access the IDM website next Saturday (13), from 11 am to 3 pm (BRT), to watch a series of lectures. Registration is not required. The free live broadcast will feature several experts. Participants can choose whether they want to listen to the presentations in English, French or Spanish, and there is a special program for each language.

Through social media, math enthusiasts can also participate by sending photos, posters, and videos celebrating the date. The material can be posted on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the hashtag #idm314. The posts may be shared on IDM's channels. It's also possible to browse a page on the website where a list of how mathematics has contributed to improving our lives is available.

This is the second celebration of International Mathematics Day . The date of March 1Wednesdays (3/14) was already known as Pi Day in several countries and was officially recognized by UNESCO in 2019. Led by the IMU, the project encourages schools, universities, and other institutions to use the date to develop events and activities that promote the importance of mathematics for students and society as a whole.

IMPA will also celebrate the date with a webinar next Monday (15), at 11 am . The virtual meeting will show how mathematical solutions are within reach of companies. Participating in the chat are IMPA's Director-General, Marcelo Viana, researcher Paulo Orenstein (IMPA) and Claudia Sagastizábal, from the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Scientific Computing at Unicamp, and researcher at CeMEAI (Center for Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry) .
