In a scenario where women represent approximately 30% of the world's scientists, discussing the challenges faced by women in academia becomes increasingly necessary. With this in mind, the 4th EMMI will feature researchers Jacqueline Mesquita (UnB), president of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), and Ana Cristina Vieira (UFMG), who will address, respectively, opportunities for women in mathematics and the gender gap in the field. IMPA researchers Carolina Araujo and Luna Lomonaco will also lead a discussion with participants. The event will also include the MatematiQueer group , which conducts studies on gender and sexuality in mathematics education. To close the day, IMPA students will hold a roundtable discussion and share their experiences in the field.

Luana Aparecida Soares Costa, a doctoral student at IMPA and member of the event's Organizing Committee, states that this year's challenge is to increase male participation in the proposed activities. “This event is becoming a tradition at IMPA, and it's very important that we continue to remember that women in mathematics exist. We are few, but we have to fight for our place in mathematics. We really want to encourage men's participation, as we believe this issue concerns everyone and is necessary for them to reflect on the role they play in the field,” said the student.
