IMPA will offer 30 scholarships to NES students.

This month, IMPA signed a cooperation agreement with the Federal University of Alagoas (Ufal) and will offer 30 scholarships of R$ 500 each to students enrolled in the New Supplementary Education (NES) program – an excellence program in Mathematics and Computer Science offered by the institution to high school students.

“The partnership between IMPA and NES contributes to the differentiated qualification of talented students with a view to their entry into the best undergraduate courses in the area of exact and technological sciences, such as the Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics of Technology and Innovation at IMPA Tech,” highlights the Director-General of IMPA, Marcelo Viana.

Offered since 2023, NES is a free course aimed at training young people skilled in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The three-year program takes place outside of regular school hours, in a hybrid format, allowing it to serve students from all over Brazil. NES currently has 89 participants from 14 states, most of whom attend public schools. Participants from low-income families receive scholarships that can reach up to R$ 1,500.

“During their time in the program, students learn university-level subjects from mathematics and computer science courses, and especially subjects related to artificial intelligence and data science. These students gain professional experience with public agencies and companies, and in some cases, they bring solutions to these agencies. The partnership with IMPA is fundamental for the development of these students,” explains Krerley Oliveira, professor at the Institute of Mathematics at Ufal.

On September 20th, NES will open applications for the selection of 20 new students. According to the announcement , students from the 9th grade of elementary school onwards can apply, however, the project will give preference to participants who are in their first year of high school. The selection process schedule can be found at this link.
